  • M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation Welcomes Patrons to the Newly Renamed Lakeland College Park Community Center!

Riverdale, MD — We are thrilled to announce that the College Park Community Center has officially been renamed the Lakeland College Park Community Center!

This name change is part of a restorative justice effort by M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County, to honor the legacy of the Lakeland community. Lakeland holds deep historical significance as the only area in College Park where African Americans were allowed to live during segregation. Tragically, the neighborhood was permanently altered in the 1970s and 80s during the Lakeland Urban Renewal Project, which displaced many families, most of whom were unable to return.

By incorporating “Lakeland” into the community center’s name, we aim to preserve the memory of this vibrant and close-knit community while providing a welcoming space for all residents today. This change reflects our commitment to honoring our shared history and ensuring that every community member feels represented and connected.

    What This Means for You

    • Programs and Services: Our offerings remain the same, and the community center continues to serve as a hub for programs, resources, and events.
    • Updated Signage: The name has already been updated on the facility’s door. Additional updates to signage, existing printed materials, and digital content will take time to complete. We appreciate your patience during this transition.
    • Engagement Opportunities: We encourage you to learn more about the history of Lakeland and share your thoughts with us at public.affairs@pgparks.com.

    Join Us in Celebrating!

We hope the renaming inspires excitement and pride. Stay tuned for opportunities to engage with the center and participate in events that highlight the remarkable legacy of Lakeland.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We look forward to continuing to serve you at the Lakeland College Park Community Center!

Thank you for your support and understanding as we honor the past while building a brighter future.

    Sincerely,

M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County

Hispanic Festival in Prince George's County.

RIVERDALE, Md. – Thousands of people gather at Lane Manor Park in Adelphi every year to kick off the official start of Hispanic Heritage Month with the Hispanic Festival. Filled with music, folkloric dances, authentic Latin cuisine, and community resources, the festival has been a long-standing tradition for Latinos in Prince George’s County and the surrounding areas. This year, the Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County marks the 40th anniversary of the festival.

“We’re excited to celebrate this milestone for the Hispanic Festival,” said Carlos Ocasio, Area Specialist with the Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County. “The festival brings the community together, we share our cultures, and traditions and create a sense of family.”

The festival started as the Hispanic Arts Festival at the former Takoma Langley Community Center in 1979. In 1991 the festival had outgrown the center, and the Department of Parks and Recreation decided to move the festival to its current location at Lane Manor Park just off University Blvd.

A parade of flags representing the Latin American countries will commence the festivities. Throughout the festival, people are invited to enjoy children’s activities, carnival games, craft vendors, and live entertainment including folkloric dancers from Brazil and Colombia and Latin music bands.

Hispanic Festival will take place Sunday, September 15, from 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm at Lane Manor Park at 7601 West Park & University Blvd. Adelphi 20783.
